A wonder of nature. Or how a plant adapts to an austere environment and hides to escape predators. Meeting with the Lithops. An arid soil and climate, where heat and drought are extreme. A poor land made of stones and sand... It is the desert, far from all life. And yet, yet. In the middle of all this, all ground level, just emerging from the Lithops (Greek words lithos, stone, and opsis, appearance). These stone plants or living stones are well named, as they merge in the landscapes, as they force mimicry with the mineral universe that surrounds them. To survive in a hostile environment and avoid being eaten. Lithops – succulents like cacti – grow naturally in the deserts of southern Africa and Namibia. Their color is usually quite dull, between greenish gray, yellowish, brownish, reddish. In the natural state, only the upper part with translucent marbling appears. Below, they have two lobes. In fact, well-plump leaves that serve as a water reserve. Want to know more? Come and visit the Jardin des Piquants during Rendez-vous au Jardin 2025. Their names? Amicorum, hallii, julii, fulleri, fulviceps, karasmontana, marmorata, optica, salicola or villetii. Speaking of names... Come see (or review) the collection of more than 1,600 cacti and meet many families: Cereus, Echinopsis, Ferocactus, Mammillaria, Lobivia, Rebutia, Gymnocalycium and many others.
