The Plaisirs de Musique ensemble invites us to listen to popular music from the Sephardic tradition and from the Iberian and Mediterranean worlds. These musics all deal, in various ways, with the theme of love.
The Sephardim are a community of Spanish Jews who were expelled from Spain in 1492 following the long reconquista (reconquest). Subsequently, wandering and the search for a resting place led them to settle in various parts of the Mediterranean basin. Their culture is still alive today. Their spirited and emotional songs, their poignant lyrics, melodies and tones reflecting the aspirations of individuals and the hope of a people, are a marvel to the listener.
