October 1793. Paris, France. Olympe de Gouges is in prison awaiting trial by the Revolutionary Court. At her side are a fanatical young soldier charged with guarding her, the soldier's mother, an illiterate, intelligent and sensitive woman who is trying to ease the prisoner's detention, and a young revolutionary woman who is preparing a plan to escape. Their confrontations give rise to strong and profoundly human feelings.
A powerful, poetic play about women's involvement in the French Revolution, and because in the 18th century, as in the 21st, ‘all revolutions are fought by women in the streets, and all revolutions send women back to their homes’.
