The Secret of the Trees, a comedy of masks
Monsieur Gaspar, a stingy and selfish timber merchant, wants to cut down the last forest in the region to make himself even richer. But the forest belongs to a destitute grandmother, who gets free food there...
Toudjik, her grandson, comes to help her fight the evil merchant, and reveals the secret of the trees...
‘We have to help each other, that's the law of nature’. This quote from Jean de la Fontaine is the starting point for our discussion. We now know that trees, through their roots, communicate, help each other and build an environment that benefits everyone. What if we applied this principle to humankind?
The text addresses our ability to live with our environment, but also the living conditions of the most disadvantaged, mutual aid, difference, as well as intergenerational solidarity. Living together is a challenge, and it's up to us to meet it.
